Washington had a large population of native groups in the west such as Chinook, Puyallup, Quinault, Nooksak, and Skagit. They also have a large population on the east such as Walla Walla, Spokane, and Yakama. Most of the the cities on the east were named after some of these tribes.
Early Settlers
The first European to set foot on Washington soil was Bruno Heceta of Spain, who landed near Point Grenville in 1775. Both Britain and the United States established claims to the region in 1792. In that year Capt. George Vancouver of Britain explored Puget Sound while Capt. Robert Gray located and named the Columbia River. Gray's voyage and Lewis and Clark's arrival in 1805 led the United States to claim all the Oregon country. The first settlement was Fort Nisqually in 1833 . Soon Fort Nisqually was producing crops and livestock for local stores and export to Russian America, Hawaii, Spanish California, Europe, and Asia.
